BASIS Texas charter schools are public open enrollment, tuition-free schools serving grades K–12 in three schools in the San Antonio area. BASIS offers students a well-balanced education that allows them to achieve at internationally competitive levels. Taught by Subject Expert Teachers, the BASIS Curriculum model supports an academic program based on the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) standards. It encourages self-motivation and hard work, helps students master rigorous content, and thoroughly prepares them for college. BASIS students have been recognized as the state’s top performers on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), setting the standard for academic achievement in Bexar County.
The BASIS Curriculum for grades K–4 focuses on building a solid academic foundation, while teaching fundamental skills - critical thinking, organization, time management, effective study habits, and behavioral expectations - that prepare students for success. The BASIS Curriculum is spiraled, building upon concepts taught in previous courses, to facilitate content mastery. The curriculum for grades 5–7 builds upon the foundations laid in grades K–4, while introducing high-level content standards and an accelerated work pace. This ensures that students are prepared for honors and AP-level courses when they enter high school.
The BASIS Curriculum for grades 8–12 is regarded as one of the most academically advanced high school programs in the world, preparing students for success in college and beyond. The acceleration of the curriculum allows students the option of graduating after 11th grade; however, most students choose to continue their studies in 12th grade in order to complete a Senior Project and Capstone Courses.
In addition to the core subjects, students also take Music, Art, Drama, and P.E. Extracurricular activities include clubs such as Academic UIL, Creative Writing, Robotics, Speech and Debate, and Yearbook. Sports include Basketball, Cross-Country, Flag Football, and Volleyball.
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) named BASIS Texas charter schools among the highest-rated districts in Bexar County for the 2018-19 school year, awarding it a state letter grade of ‘A’ and an overall score of 98. This rating placed BASIS Texas first in the San Antonio region and third in the state.
BASIS Texas charter schools students excelled on the 2018-19 STAAR assessments, outscoring their Texas peers overall. In particular, the mastery rates for BASIS Texas were 54% in Reading (compared to 21% statewide), 56% in Math (compared to 26% statewide), 58% in Science (compared to 25% statewide), 82% in Social Studies (compared to 33% statewide), and 35% in Writing (compared to 14% statewide).
BASIS Texas also received a rating of 100% for college, career, and military readiness compared to 65% statewide.
BASIS San Antonio Shavano 2019 graduates earned an average score of 1372 on the SAT and 31 on the ACT - far surpassing the national averages of 1068 and 20.8, respectively.
They had a 100 percent college acceptance rate, with each graduate earning an average of over $200,000 in scholarship awards.
